Cheran has published seven anthologies of poetry in Tamil. His plays in English have been performed in Canada and the US. His poems and other works have been translated into English, German, Malayalam, Kannada, Sinhala and Swedish. His latest play in English, Not By Our Tears, was premiered in Toronto and toured the US in 2010. For his plays and performances please visit: www.asylumtheatregroup.ca
Translations of his poems in English have appeared in the following magazines: Bomb (New York), Wake (UK), Hayden's Ferry Review (USA), Sudasien (Germany), Lanka (Sweden), The Little Magazine (India), and Lanka Actua (Netherlands). His poems in English translation have been published by Navayana, New Delhi in a collection: Waking up is a dream; and Wilting Laughter: Three Tamil Poets (Toronto: TSAR publishers, 2009). His new collections of poems in a bilingual edition, You Cannot Turn Away will be launched at the World Tamil Writers Conference in Singapore in October, 2011.
Currently, he is Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the University of Windsor, Canada.

Mr N Suseenthiran (Germany) Writer

Nadarajah Suseenthiran has lived in Berlin since 1981. He is one of the freelance editors of Uyirnizhal, a socio-cultural and literary quarterly from Paris. Based in Germany, he is a well-known Tamil writer, translator, literary and art critic. He has participated in several international conferences, such as the World Tamil Writers Conference, held in Colombo in January 2011 and Tamil Ini 2000, a conference held in Chennai which Tamil artists and writers from all over the world attended. Suseenthiran is an active member of the Puhalida Ilakkiya Chanthippu (a literary meeting started in the later part of eighties in Germany and then expanded to Europe), an international public forum founded in 1988 for exile literature. He has also published through his NOOL Publishing, five books of poems and translations by different authors. He has also translated many articles, short stories, poems from German and English to Tamil, and from Tamil to German.

Dr Sabapathy has researched on Malaysian Tamil literature since the 1980s and has presented numerous papers in international, national and university conferences, seminars and workshops. He has published his research papers in international research journals and other magazines. Based on his years of research in Malaysian Tamil literature, Dr Sabapathy has also published five books in Tamil, two books in English and several essays in Tamil, English and Malay languages. His current work at the Department of Indian Studies, University of Malaya includes research, teaching and guiding MA/ PhD students in the areas of Modern Tamil Literature, Malaysian Literature, Diaspora Literature, Research Methodologies, Drama in Tamil Tradition, Cinema and Tamil Society, Folk Literature in Tamil and Language Curriculum Development.

Dr SP Thinnappan is Convener for Tamil Language at Centre for Language Studies in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, National University of Singapore. He is a leading Tamil scholar. His areas of specialization are Tamil Grammar, Linguistics, Language Teaching and Literature. Through his research, publications, and his academic career, he has contributed immensely to the promotion of Tamil in Singapore and the Tamil diaspora world at large. For many years, he served as head of the Tamil Unit at the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University and as an academic staff in the Department of Indian Studies, University of Malaya, Malaysia and Annamalai University, India. He is also an Adjunct Professor and Adviser to the B.A. Tamil degree programme at UNISIM (SIM University), Singapore.

Dr Sankaran’s areas of research interest include South Asian Fictions, Gender & Eco Studies. She has a special interest in Tamil literature and pedagogy and has participated in Singapore Tamil Language Review Committees in 2004 and 2009. She has published in several international journals and authored and edited several monographs and books. She is an Invited Member of the editorial committees of two international journals and was appointed by the Commonwealth Foundation, UK to serve as judge on the regional panel of The Commonwealth Writers Prize for the Asia-Pacific in 2008.

Dr Narayanan Kannan a naturalized German is originally from India. He is the founder of Tamil Heritage Foundation (www.tamilheritage.org), a global initiative to digitize and preserve Tamil heritage. He studied at American College, Madurai and obtained his PhD from Madurai Kamaraj University. His debut as a short story writer began in 1970s and has published two short story collections and a novelette collection so far. Most of his creativity exists in cyberspace (www.emozi.com). Dr N Kannan has served at Ehime University, Japan and Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel, Germany. He is currently managing an APEC training center for Environmental Education in Korea.

Muthu Nedumaran has over 25 years of experience in developing technologies for the Tamil language. He authored Murasu Anjal and Sellinam, the popular desktop and mobile application for Tamil input, rendering and content. His creations have been officially adopted by the education ministries in governments of Singapore and Malaysia. Muthu developed the fonts for Indian and Indo-Chinese languages that are included in the iPhone and the latest Macintosh operating system from Apple Inc. He is currently the Chief Executive Officer of Knowledge Channels Synergy Sdn. Bhd., Malaysia. Besides driving Technology and Product Marketing initiatives for large corporations like Sun Microsystems and Oracle Corporation in the Asia Pacific region, he was also actively involved in niche technology developments such as Java, Web and Mobile technologies. Muthu holds a degree in Electronic Engineering with a major in Computer Engineering from the University of Technology Malaysia (1985).

Ms Nagaluxmy Sivasamboo (France) Editor Uyirnizhal

Luxmy (Nagaluxmy Sivasamboo) was born in Sri Lanka and left for France in 1981. She has been actively involved in the cultural politics of Tamil diaspora in Europe since 1990. She is very much concerned about feminist issues. She was one of the active members of the “Puhalida Ilakkiyach Chanthippu” (a literary meeting started in the later part of eighties in Germany and then expanded to Europe) and “Penkal Santhippu” (started in the early part of the nineties). She was one of the founding editors of Exile - a Tamil journal for culture, fine arts and criticism and later became the editor of Uyirnizhal (www.uyirnizhal.com). Through Exile she has published several anthologies of poetry by different authors. She has translated numerous articles and short stories from English and French to Tamil.

Mr M Mayooran (Sri Lanka) Writer

M Mayooran was born in the town of Trinconmalee in Eastern Sri Lanka and works as a software developer. He is one of the founders of the Noolaham Tamil Digital Library Project and took part in the development of the official Sri Lankan Tamil-Sinhala Keyboard Driver for GNU-Linux platform with the Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA) of Sri Lanka. Mayooran’s research interests include Tamil computing and the politics of technology. He is affiliated with Thesiya Kalai Ilakkiya Peravai (National Art Literature Federation), Social Science Study Circle, Lanka Linux User Group and is an Executive Committee member of the International Forum for Information Technology in Tamil (INFITT). Mayooran has been actively blogging on his interests since 2004 and his blogs include mauran.blogspot.com, mmauran.net/blog, mmauran.net/oli.

Gopal is the author of many articles on cinema, drama and literature. He has also translated from original Bengali the works of the dramatist Badal Sircar. The two books of translations are: "Evam Indrajit" (“Pirakoru Indrajit" in Tamil) and collected plays of Badal Sircar. Gopal has authored a short story collection, "Izhanthu Pona Aagayam", and a poetry collection, "Aluminiyap Paravaigal". His works have been published in Kanaiyazhi, Deepam, Kalachuvadu, Uyirmmai, Thamarai, Padigal, and other literary magazines. Gopal is also acknowledged as a force behind the street theatre in Tamil Nadu and presently contributes to Web magazines: Thinnai, Solvanam.

A Palaniappan (Singapore) Assistant Director Singapore Parliament

A Palaniappan is currently the Assistant Director of the Language Services Department at the Singapore Parliament. He provides simultaneous interpretation service during parliament sittings and at other national events such as the National Day Rally. He heads the MICA Tamil Media Terminology Standardisation Committee which is now working on the compilation of commonly used media terms. Palaniappan is alsoa keen social worker who had worked with the grassroots organizations and religious institutions.
As part of life long learning process, he graduated with a Bachelor Degree in English Language and Literature in 2007 at the UniSIM where he is an associate faculty member.

After obtaining his B A Hons degree in History from the Yaazh University in Sri Lanka and a Master’s from the Mysore University, India, V Devaraj has spent the past 24 years in journalism. Having an abiding interest in political, social and literary fields, he has written more than a thousand articles on those subjects. These include commentaries on Sri Lanka’s national politics, Tamil, Muslim affairs, ethnic issues, and the political, social, economic and educational issues of Indian descendants in Sri Lanka. His columns in Veerakesari weekly are not only popular among Sri Lankans but also among the Tamil diaspora. In 2010, he won the award for the best Tamil journalist. He also was selected as the Man of the Year for 2007 and has won more than 20 awards over the years. He continues to write with the objective of increased power sharing as the only way to find a final solution for ethnic issues. Through Veerakesari, he has helped develop the literary arts and has provided a base for nurturing new writers. He has also conducted competitions for short stories and novels and published the entries as books.

Ramesh Gopalakrishnan, popularly known as Nagarjunan, 52, was born in Chennai/Madras. As a writer and a human rights researcher, and in earlier avatars, a scientist and a print/audio journalist, his existence is multiple. He writes mainly on arrivals and ruptures of forms in language, science, history and life, deploying a rigorous perception and cognition of deeper operating structures. He is fluent in English and French too, is happier writing in Tamil and translating into Tamil. He shuttles between India and the UK.

Dr. Krishnan Maniam is currently Associate Professor at the Department of Indian Studies, University of Malaya, Malaysia. He obtained his Bachelor degree from the University of Malaya and also his Master degree in comparative literature from the same University. His Master thesis on ‘A comparative study on Tamil and Malay short stories (1957-1970) was published by Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka, a leading Malaysian publishing institution. He completed his PhD at the University of Madras, India. His doctoral thesis was on ‘Trends in Tamil novels (1970-1995)'. His research areas cover comparative literature, modern Tamil literature, Malaysian Tamil literature, Malaysian Indian social life and Malay literature. He has presented over 50 papers at local and international conferences and published more than 50 articles and book chapters.

Prof Kirpal Singh is an internationally acclaimed writer, scholar, critic and poet. Since the publication of his book Thinking Hats & Coloured Turbans: Creativity Across Cultures (2004), he has come to be known as a Creativity Guru. In 2005, Kirpal became the first ever non-American to be elected to the Board of the prestigious American Creativity Association (ACA) where he is now Chair of ACA-Int. Kirpal also sits on several other Boards and has been consultant to several major international MNCs. He has been specially invited to share his insights into the nature of creativity by many top-notch bodies such as the AMI (American Managers for Innovation), MIT, CCL (Centre for Creative Leadership). A much sought after faculty trainer and special invitee to some of the best arts and literary festivals around the world, Kirpal was recently a distinguished International Poet at the Austin International Poetry Festival. In 1997, Kirpal was Distinguished International Writer at the world-famous Iowa Writing Program. To-date Kirpal has published more than 25 books and over 120 articles.

Jean-Luc CHEVILLARD (b. 1956), trained in Mathematics and in Linguistics, studied Tamil in South India with Prof. Muttu Shanmugam Pillai and specialized in the Tamil Grammatical tradition, writing his thesis on the /Cēṉāvaraiyam/ (சேனாவரையம்), and revising it with Pandit T.V. Gopal Iyer. Recruited by the the École Française d'Extrême-Orient (EFEO) or French School of Asian Studies, and then by the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique or National Center of Scientific Research, he belongs to the team "Histoire des Théories Linguistiques" or "History of Linguistic Theories". Jean-Luc has published books, scientific articles, a CD-ROM (Digital Tēvāram (கணினித் தேவாரம்) and is the Editor of the journal “Histoire Épistemologie Langage” or “History Epistemology Language” (ISSN 0750-8069). Currently posted in the EFEO Pondicherry center, he has been recently involved in the digitizing and the cataloguing of the EFEO palm-leaf manuscript collection.

Uthaya Sankar SB is a Malaysian writer who writes in Bahasa Malaysia, his first language. His proficiency with the language led many to believe that he must have grown up in a Malay environment. But Uthaya grew up in Taiping, Perak where the majority were Indians. Uthaya lectured in Bahasa Malaysia, Moral Education and Malaysian Studies in various colleges from 1999 to 2007. Between 1996 and 2010, he was also attached to Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM). Since March 2011, Uthaya is a full-time freelancer under Uthaya’s Media, Motivation and Publication Consultancy. He is the founder president of Kumpulan Sasterawan Kavyan (Kavyan Writers’ Group) which set a record in The Malaysia Book of Records in 2003 through Baca Cerpen Kavyan, a non-stop Bahasa Malaysia short story recital for 96 hours and 32 minutes. Maalan (V.Narayanan) is a writer – journalist, with the distinction of leading the premier Tamil journals namely India Today (Tamil), Dinamani, Kumudam and Kungumam and Sun News Channel as its Editor. Currently he is advisor to the School of Media studies at SRM University and is editor of Puthiya Thalaimurai, a Tamil weekly. He holds a masters degree in Journalism from University of Florida. As a writer he has 13 titles to his credit. His collections of short stories were books of study on contemporary Tamil writing for post graduate students at various universities in Tamilnadu and one of his short story collections, “Marudal Varum” was awarded the best book of the year 1989 by the Vice Chancellor of Central University, Pondicherry. His poems have found a place in the anthology of protest poetry, Voices of Emergency, compiled by Prof. John Oliver Perry of Tufts University, USA and in the Anthology of Tamil Poetry by Sahitya Academy of India.
Maalan’s stories in translation have appeared in the leading magazines like Illustrated Weekly of India, India Today, Decan Herald, Vipula, Mathru Bhoomi and in the Anthology of Morden Tamil Stories published by Writer’s Workshop, Calcutta.

Sascha Ebeling is Assistant Professor of Tamil and South Indian Studies in the Department of South Asian Languages and Civilizations at the University of Chicago. Before coming to Chicago, he taught at the Institute of Indology and Tamil Studies at the University of Cologne, Germany, from which he also holds a PhD in Tamil literature. He is the author of Colonizing the Realm of Words: The Transformation of Tamil Literature in Nineteenth-Century South India (SUNY Press, 2010) and various essays on pre-modern and modern Tamil literature. He is currently writing a book on contemporary Tamil literature from a global perspective.

Dr Rengasamy Karthigesu began his career as a broadcaster with Radio Television Malaysia as announcer, newscaster and producer in the sixties through the seventies. In 1975, he switched to academia to become a lecturer in broadcasting at the Science University of Malaysia. He was appointed Professor in 1994 and retired from the post in 1998. His research papers on broadcasting in Malaysia and Asia have been published in international journals. Popularly known as Re Ka to his Tamil readers, he has published several novels and short story anthologies, some of which have won awards.

Dr Thamizhavan is a retired Professor and Head of Tamil Department at the Dravidian University. He has also held the following positions: Professor of Tamil, Bangalore University; Visiting professor, Warsaw University, Poland; Director, Translation Centre, Sahithya Academy's Bangalore Centre.
Thamizhavan has authored many books including four novels and more than 20 books of critical writings. He has also published articles in international journals and has been conferred the Canada Literary Garden award for best Tamil novel in 2008.

Kavitha is currently a Senior Producer with MediaCorp Pte Ltd. In her 12 years in the media and communications industry, she has had the privilege of working in all Tamil news platforms in Singapore – print, radio and television. Kavitha has observed Tamil literary developments in Singapore as part of her profession. She was also formerly a News Editor in MediaCorp’s English news radio station, 938Live. Apart from being a broadcaster, Kavitha has worked as a civil servant, corporate communications professional and an educator. She completed her Bachelor of Arts Degree and Masters of Applied Sociology Degree at the National University of Singapore.
Outside her work, Kavitha hopes to contribute to research in contemporary Tamil literary developments and the mother tongue reading habits of Tamil students in Singapore.

Associate Professor Dr A Ra Sivakumaran is the head of the Tamil Language and Culture Division, Asian Languages and Cultures, National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He is a consultant to the Ministry of Education for Singapore Tamil text books. He received NIE Excellence in Teaching Award consecutively for five years. He is a pioneer academic researcher of Singapore Tamil Literature and was the first candidate to be registered in the Tamil Language and Literature PhD program at NTU and paved the way for a Ph.D program in Tamil research. He has published a total of 14 books as author, co-author, editor or co-editor. He has presented papers at many international conferences. He is a Trustee of the Singapore Tamil Teachers’ Union and the Vice President of the Singapore Thirumurai Organising Committee. He is a member of the Citizen Consultative Committee at the Eunos Community Club and is the proud recipient of the Goodwill Certificate from the People’s Association of Singapore three times.

Mr Rama Kannabiran (Singapore) Writer

Rama Kannabiran is a retired school teacher. He has published four collections of short stories and a collection of novellas. His stories have been translated into English, Malay and Mandarin.
Rama Kannabiran was the winner of the 1990 Southeast Asian Write Award as well as the recipient of several other awards including the Mont Blanc Award and the Thamizavel Award. He also received the Culture Medallion for his contributions to literature in Singapore in 1998. He is an Advisory Panel member for literature in the National Arts Council since 2000. He represented Singapore in the 1998 International Writing Programme in Iowa, U.S.A. and was a Honorary Writing Fellow at Iowa University. During his stay there, Kannabiran completed his novel "Peedam".

S P Paneerselvam has more than 30 years of experience in broadcasting. A former Producer with the Singapore Radio Oli96.8FM, he was a Senior Journalist with the News Division till retirement. Paneerselvam continues to be work in the News Division as a part-time journalist. Since 1960, he has been writing short stories, novels, essays, plays and poems. His works have been published in newspapers and magazines in Singapore, Malaysia and India. He has produced and presented numerous programmes on radio. Paneerselvam has also presented research papers in several seminars in both Singapore and Malaysia. He has BA (Madurai Kamaraj University; American Lincoln University), Higher Diploma (Oklahoma University), MA (Annamalai University) and Mphil degrees (Azhagappa University).

Seetha Lakshmi is currently Associate Professor at the Asian languages and Cultures Academic Group of the National Institute of Education. She has extensive experience in journalism and broadcasting. For the past nine years she has been involved in funded research projects at the National Institute of Education on Standard Spoken Tamil, Curriculum Review, Tamil Pedagogy for the Tamil Diaspora and Sociolinguistics. She has presented over 30 papers at local and international conferences and published more than 50 articles/reviews and book chapters. She has published more than 10 books as a sole or co-author.

Vadivalagan (or Vadi PVSS as he is popularly known) is a bilingual (English and Tamil) writer, director and performer of the Stage, Radio and TV. He has staged several critically acclaimed plays in Singapore and Australia. His plays have won several local awards too. The local Singaporean daily, The Straits Times, includes Vadi PVSS in an exclusive club of creators for the 21st century. The tele-movie ‘Pathu Maasam” which he wrote and directed, was broadcast in Singapore’s Vasantham TV and India’s Vijay TV. The first Tamil cartoon in Singapore ‘Vigadavadi’, written and directed by Vadi PVSS, also won the Prix Jeunesse International Award.
